On Finding Happiness Every Day With Mo Seetubtim
It is a given that planners help us make each day more productive and aid us in tackling chaos and stress but not every planner is designed to help us become happier by mastering the art of positive thinking, mindfulness, gratitude, and self-development. The Happiness Planner incorporates the practices of positive thinking, positive affirmations, mindfulness, gratitude, and self-development into the daily and weekly/monthly pages. Let us find out how the founder of blog The BrandMentalist went ahead to inspire readers with positive quotes and affirmations and eventually went on to launch her very own stationery brand that helps people become happier.
A. The Happiness Planner was born after your blog received a lot of positive feedback especially for motivational quotes and topics related to happiness and positivity. Have you always been someone who focusses on self improvement or was it after a particular event that you chose to look deeper inside at the self ?
Yes. I have always been interested in personal development. I was fortunate enough to grow up with a father who encouraged me to self-reflect as that’s the path to understanding one’s self which is the key to anything else in life really.
B. Mindfulness is something that is not often associated with teenagers or with the young . Yet being a young woman yourself , you have been practising mindfulness for a while now . How important do you think is it for teenagers or youngsters ?
Teenage years are one of the most important years in our life because our lives can turn right or wrong in just mere seconds by hanging out with the wrong peers and making bad choices. When we were in our teens, we didn’t fully know what’s right or wrong. Most importantly, we were easily influenced. Practicing mindfulness can help teenagers live in the moment and be able to distinguish what’s right and what’s wrong better.. Mindfulness can also help them become more in touch with who they are, become more aware of their surroundings and their judgement, and become less likely to make bad choices purely based on impulsive emotions or when under peer pressure.
C . We learn from our experiences and grow and when a product like the Happiness Planner is designed, it is obvious that it must have come into being from your own personal experiences. How did the idea originate ?
I have been practicing positive thinking since little because I grew up with a mother who’s very strict, conservative and very different from me. We argued a lot. She rather focuses on the negative side of things. So my Dad helped me get through those moments especially when I was in my teenage years. He introduced me to the art of positive thinking and how I could slowly change, shift, and adjust my focus to the positive. Everything is about perception really. This practice really put me into perspective. So when I asked my readers what they wanted me to write about and they said they wanted to become more positive, it reminded me of how I learned to adopt the positive mindset. So, I tried to come up with a tool that can be integrated into people’s lives in a seamless way in which they can practice positive thinking over and over until their mind is trained.
D . We live in the age of technology where it has become all the more easy for us to get distracted. How do you remain focussed at something that requires discipline and training of the mind ?
If I’m doing something that requires a lot of focus, I would actually quit my internet browser and make sure I don’t check Facebook or read articles that could distract me. I’d turn my phone off or put it on silence, go to a quiet place, put on a headphone (to block out the noise), and just really focus. Once I’m in flow, I’m super focused and outside distractions can’t bother me for a while.
If the task/project is complex and requires a list of sub-tasks that need to be done, I make sure I write all the sub-tasks down and tick them off one by one. Breaking a goal down into smaller tasks can help you not only focus, but also feel less overwhelmed. Make sure you focus on one task at a time.
E. Do you have a spiritual practice or a daily ritual that you follow?
Sometimes I meditate. It helps me focus and gets through life’s challenges. Working out is also like a meditation to me. When I work out I focus on my breathing and focus on the moment – I don’t think about anything else. After every workout, I feel more relieved and relaxed, not just physically but also mentally.
I also practice gratitude and positive affirmations. They are a part of who I am now so it’s not like I tell myself everyday that I need to practice it. But I make sure that every morning when I wake up, before I start my day, I tend to look for at least one thing I’m excited about that day – it can be the beautiful weather, a great lunch, a friend I’ll be meeting, or even my workout.
Positive affirmations is basically telling your mind over and over what your wishes are. Having faith in yourself and taking actions are the key to making those wishes come true. Whenever I have a wish – usually a personal development or a career goal – I’d tell myself over and over what I want to achieve. I will also think about what I should do strategically to achieve that goal and what and how I’d feel when I finally achieve that goal. Your subconscious mind is powerful. Be careful what you whisper it. Everything I have ever achieved in life, I owe it to the power of positive affirmations.
F. The whole aim of the planner is to help us live each day with a purpose and move ahead with positivity and passion. How would you recommend us to use the planner to develop our visions ?
In order to achieve the objective of the planner, you need to use it intentionally. You have to be ready mentally to make the change and to improve yourself. No matter how good a tool is, if your mind is not ready for it, you will eventually give in. So make it a priority to keep using the planners and sticking to writing things down everyday.
Is your goal to become a more positive and grateful person? Is your goal to get over anxiety and depression? Is your goal to improve your inner qualities and change habits? Is your goal to find your true self and passion? Whatever your goal may be, use it with excitement and with a goal in mind.
G. From posting quotes to blogging and the success of Happiness Planner, you have really come a long way with handwork and passion. What would your advice be to women who have the same dreams of following their passions?
Have faith in yourself and keep improving your skills. You know what you’re good at. You know what you lack. Do something that you’re good at. Focus on your strengths. This will help you turn your dreams into reality more successfully.
H . We can see that you are coming up with with new projects this year including the Wanderlust Planner. Could you tell us more about your plans for this year?
Travel is a huge part of my life. I moved to Australia when I was 19 for college and ended up staying there for 8 years. Since I started The Happiness Planner, I have started traveling a lot more because I can now work online. So as I was traveling, I started getting all these ideas for an awesome travel journal/planner. The Wanderlust Planner is a travel journal/planner that will contain all the things one needs that a typical travel journal/planner doesn’t provide. Other than this, we’re also working on The Happiness Planner app! I’m pretty excited about this so please stay tuned.
I am very excited about reviewing my first Happiness Planner next month and since I am sure every body would want one, I am happy to say that the delivery is available worldwide. 😀 Visit The BrandMentalist or order your Happiness Planner (they run out of stocks quickly, so hurry) .
